The practice of acupuncture is an essential part of Chinese healing system which has been practised in China and many Eastern countries for thousands of years. In the West it has often been used as a means of pain relief; however traditionally acupuncture is used for improving the general well being of the patient.

According to the Chinese philosophy our body’s functioning is controlled by an energy field known as Qi. In a healthy state the Qi flows smoothly through channels beneath the skin called meridians. Qi has two equal and opposite qualities – Yin and Yang – and when these get out of balance, illness may result. In acupuncture treatment, very fine needles are inserted into the channels of energy in order to stimulate the body’s own healing response and restore its natural balance. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors such as diet, toxicity, hereditary factors, emotional shock and physical or mental trauma, anxiety and grief, fear and insecurity, infections and endocrine disorders. Therefore the acupuncture can be useful in treating a range of problems from acute colds to long term hormonal imbalance, from menstrual disorders to fertility and menopause.

    Fertility and Acupuncture

There is growing evidence that acupuncture treatment along with Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM), given alongside conventional fertility treatment, increases the chances of success considerably. A recent study reports if acupuncture treatment is continued during egg collection and embryo transfer, the chances of successful pregnancy can increase by more than 65%.

    How does it work?

Many research studies have demonstrated that Acupuncture and CHM treatment regulates the ovarian cycle and creates a better hormonal balance between the pituitary gland and ovary functions. This itself can improve the chances of natural pregnancy if irregularity in ovarian cycle is a reason for difficulties in conception.

After successful embryo transfer, continuous use of acupuncture and CHM treatment significantly reduces the risk of miscarriage.

Can acupuncture affect the sperm count?

There is also evidence that acupuncture and CHM treatment have positive effect on sperm count, morphology and mobility complications in men with the resultant difficulties in conception. Often in these situations treatment offered to both partners is desirable.

Wider role of acupuncture in infertility problems

As we, however, know acupuncture is a holistic system of treatment. Its effect is not limited to the physical aspects of conception only. Couples facing difficulties in conceiving often are under quite severe mental and emotional stress too – a condition which is counter productive and compounds their difficulties. Acupuncture is well known for reducing all kinds of mental stress and consequently helps to create a more balanced emotional state in couples undergoing fertility treatment.

    Acupuncture and other gynaecological problems

Acupuncture plays a much wider role in women’s health. Apart from reducing the pre-menstrual symptoms, acupuncture has been proven to be of value in the treatment of conditions such as poly-cystic ovaries, menstrual irregularity, severe menstrual pain, endometriosis. adverse symptoms of menopause such as hot flushes and mood swings and many other gynaecological conditions

    Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is another part of the ancient Chinese healing system. A mixture of herbs is often prescribed independently or along with acupuncture treatment to correct a malfunction in the body. Chinese herbal medicine has been practised for over two thousand years and throughout its long history, emphasis has been placed on its safe and effective administration.

There has been some concern, mainly in the western world, about the danger of using Chinese herbs. However, prescribed correctly by a properly trained practitioner, Chinese herbs are totally safe. With their use in medicine for hundreds of years, the practitioners have acquired unprecedented body of knowledge about medicinal herbs.

A fully trained practitioner, recognised by the RCHM (the Register of Chinese’s Herbal Medicine) will be required to have full knowledge of this. Adverse effects are extremely rare if the herbs are prescribed by a trained practitioner who would naturally balance the prescription by adding appropriate ingredients in it.

Daniela Matal is member of the RCHM and has been prescribing Chinese herbs for over twelve years.

TCM is often used in conjunction with acupuncture in which case you are not charged any extra or it may be used as the primary course of treatment. You will be given a prescription and advice on where to order the herbs from. You will need to pay for the herbs yourself.
